THE INSIDE TRACK

An Arizona State University study of more than 55,000 U.S. adults, followed for about a decade, looked at 21 alternative health practices. Only yoga and Pilates were linked to a lower risk of death: 27% lower for yoga and 36% lower for Pilates.

The 2027 Tour de France route has been revealed, with 71 km of solo time trialling across two stages, the most since 2012. The July 2 to 25 race also packs 53,000 meters of climbing over 3,479 km and starts in Britain.

Caitlin McGinley (2:36:08) and Spencer Friske (2:15:05) won the Baystate Marathon with times under the Olympic Marathon Trials standards, but USATF won't count them. The course is USATF-certified, but the race hasn't held a USATF sanction since 2020.

The 2027 Norseman Xtreme Triathlon lottery drew 16,033 entrants, more than double last year's 7,956, for about 250 expected starters on August 7, 2027. Women's entries nearly tripled to 1,907, applicants came from 110 countries, and “Norseman 2.0” brings tighter cutoffs and partial course closures.

Cannondale is closing its Wilton, Connecticut headquarters, its home since its 1971 founding, and moving U.S. sales and operations to Santa Cruz, California, alongside Pon.Bike sister brands Santa Cruz and Cervélo. A state filing lists 143 workers who may be affected, and the global headquarters moves to Woudenberg, Netherlands, with job cuts phased through December 31, 2027.

Weird event: Lausanne's Vortex Race sends runners up a 2.6 km ramp, eight times around, inside a circular student residence built for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. All 2,500 entries sold out across 3K, 7K, team and “Any Pace” options, with free entries for runners with disabilities and their guides.

Wearable technology ranked No. 1 for the 10th time in ACSM's 2027 fitness trends report, based on ratings from more than 1,400 fitness professionals. Mobile exercise apps rose to No. 2, balance, flow and core strength to No. 3, and group fitness classes jumped from No. 13 to No. 7.

More than 1,400 fitness professionals ranked wearable technology No. 1 for the 10th time in ACSM's 2027 Worldwide Fitness Trends report. Mobile exercise apps climbed to No. 2. Group fitness classes jumped from No. 13 to No. 7, and influencer-led programs returned to the top 10 after falling out of the top 20.

Hoka widened the toe boxes on its Clifton 11 and Mach 7 after feedback from athletes and consumers, and Nike, Brooks and New Balance are adding room too. A 2025 Circana report found only 49% of running shoe buyers actually run, and one analyst says roomier fits will speak to the other 51% who want comfort.

Oura is rolling out Cardio Effort, a weekly cardiovascular strain score for Gen3 rings and newer. It's also testing an updated VO2 max estimate in Oura Labs that works from GPS workouts instead of a six-minute walk test. The push comes as Garmin's fitness segment grew 42% year over year in Q1 2026.

Exercise turns down DEAF1, a gene that builds up with age and stops muscle cells from clearing damaged proteins, Duke-NUS researchers report in PNAS. In fruit flies and older mice, that restored muscle strength.

Fox Factory CEO Mike Dennison is stepping down as the company cuts full-year sales guidance to as low as $1.35 billion. Q3 sales missed guidance too.

A British speedcuber ran a 5:09 mile while solving four Rubik's Cubes. Guinness hasn't confirmed the record yet.

NYRR will posthumously honor run-walk pioneer Jeff Galloway on Oct. 30. It will also induct Lynn Blackstone, one of six women who sat down at the start of the 1972 NYC Marathon, into its Hall of Fame.
